The menstrual cycle is a natural process that prepares the female reproductive system for conception. Each cycle involves the ripening of a single egg from one of the ovaries. The mature and ripened egg is launched by the ovary into the fallopian tube awaiting fertilization by a sperm. The uterus prepares a thickened endometrial (lining) in reparation for an embryo.
